Qigong is a body-mind practice that has been part of Chinese culture for over 4,000 years. It combines movement, balance, breathing and meditation. According to the National Qigong Association, there are many benefits of regular practice, including:
improved balance and coordination
increased flexibility and range of motion
pain management
enhanced strength
improved circulation
enhanced immune function
improved respiratory function
balanced nervous system
The combination of controlled breathing and slow flowing movements becomes a meditative practice that naturally reduces stress and enhances relaxation and health. As such, it's a great practice to start your day and also to unwind at the end of the day. I also love that it can be done in as little as 10 minutes to realize its many benefits.
There are many styles of qigong and lots of different practitioners. I recommend taking a look at YouTube videos to explore different teachers. One of my favorite teachers is Lee Holden. If you search for him, you will see many options to choose from. This is one of my favorite 10-minute morning routines https://youtu.be/Ac08kMK-dyI?si=8ipMR_Ir6sOHegi8
Remember, when adding something new to your routine, to always start small and piggyback the new behavior to something you already do predictably in your current routine. This system sets you up for the best success in incorporating something new in your day. For example, I practice this for 10 minutes in the morning right before I head downstairs to begin my day. It's a great way to start my day energized and centered!
